Kendo is an ancient Japanese martial art that uses protective gear and bamboo swords which is still popular among people of all ages.
Kendo was originally invented in the late Edo period based on the swordsmanship skills of the samurai and is a martial art that is taught in schools in modern Japan not only to improve physical fitness but also to cultivate a sound spirit of courtesy.
Through this experience, you will master basic kendo etiquette, manners and movements, and how to wear protective gear. You will be taught by a teacher who is certified to teach kendo, not just someone with kendo experience. At the end of the lesson, you will experience the fun of kendo by playing a match together.
The location for these lessons is Butokuden, a sacred site for Japanese martial arts, or the auditorium of a community center that is also frequented by Kyoto locals.
We invite you to join us for this interactive lesson and feel the spirit of the Samurai while having fun.
