We had beautiful guests from Italy and the USA.  A couple was from Italy, and an elegant lady was from the USA.  We arranged Newzealand flax, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers, so our tatami room was filled with summer aroma.  Italian couple had been to Yame city ( Fukuoka Prefecture) and enjoyed green tea ( Yame city is famous for green tea) before our experience.  American lady has been interested in Ikebana for a long time. We feel excited to get an opportunity to enjoy Ikebana together.

Feeling the fragrance of summer

We celebrated the beginning of Japanese new era, REIWA, at the entrance of RYOKAN with KIMIKO( a teacher)  and MIYOKO ( a manager of RYOKAN) on the day of May 1st.

Emperor Naruhito ascended Japan's Throne (that's chrysanthemum!) on May 1st.  We are filled of happy and celebrating mood a lot. It's amazing that we feel so excited and feel so fresh spontaneously and narutally even though the name of era was just changed.

The word of REIWA comes from the Japanese oldest collection of poetry, Manyo-Syu, that was created at 7th century. One poet made one beautiful poetry that appreciated the auspicious spring, the blossom of plum flowers and beautiful harmony. We love the flowers of plum tree as Ikebana teachers who love flowers, but it seems that we love plum blossom much more than before.　We are excited to meet all new our guests from all over the world in our new era!

The new era, REIWA, starts with a lot of festive mood!

We were very happy to have beautiful guests from Beijin and Shanghai who visited Japan for the first time in their life!  They are very interested in 2 sides of Japan that has a very new and modern world and simultaneously keeps a very traditional and old culture including Ikebana culture.  They love flowers so much, that's why  they have choosen our IKEBANA experience as their 1st touch to know Japanese old culture even though there are a lot of variety of activity tours in Tokyo.  We feel grateful that we got a precious opprutynity to be the first guide to show them our beautiful culutural world. This day was their last day in Japan. We hope we could cap their beautiful stay in Japan with our Ikebana momoravilia. FYI, today's our Japanese sweet on this day was YOMOGI rice cake with mugwort ( Japanese seasonal herbs) and that is a very spring confection in Japan. We appreciate the sprouting leaves with the green color of that rice cake and we favor the flegrance of YOMOGI (mugwort).

In the season of flowers!

Coincidently we had 2 groups together for our "Ikebana Experience".  A mother came to Tokyo from Ireland to see her son who is working in Tokyo and another group are from Germny.

Irish group arranged Japanese Kerria called in Japanese "YAMABUKI" and German group arranged Scotch Broom. Scotch Broom gets bloom especially in this season and their white and small flowers are beautiful. YABABUKI is unique for thier yellow flowers and we Japanese call brilliant yellow "YAMABUKI color" derived from this yellow flowers. 

We arranged a traditional flower style, "Basic Upright Style", but even we arranged a same style, over all structure will be different wiht reflecting each flower material and each personality of a person who arrange Ikebana.  We apprecited each Ikebana arrangement and enjoyed the difference of each work.

From Ireland and Germany for Ikebana Experience

They dropped in our "Ikebana Lesson" along thier family trip from LA because a beautiful mother loves flower gardening.  Maybe he is moch more interesing in sports especially at his age, but his concentration was so great that he arranged Ikebana by himself perfectly.

We served a Japanese seasonal confection, Sakura-mochi, a pink rice cake filled with sweetened bean paste, wrapped in a salt-preserved cherry leaf. We felt happy to see that they enjoyed our unique sweet.

Even a football boy enjoyed "Ikebana Lesson" with his family!

We had a smart and brilliant young gentleman, Chris, from Singapore.  This is the third time for him to come to Japan.

He's been studying architecture and already studied Ikebana by himself before this experience.  We alwasy cut flower materials in water to prolong their life that is called MIZUKIRI, but he knew that already before we met him, then we were really surprised at his passion for Ikebana.

As he told us that he really loved a tall container, we taught him a specila Ikebana technique how to fix flowers in a tall container without special tools. He acqured that skill quickly and his way of using Ikebana scissors was so nice! We agreed that the theory of architecture and that of Ikebana are quite similar. Ikebana is sometime called " Living Sculpture.  We love space and we love the theory of "Less is More".

"My sensei Kimiko-San who is as elegant as the Ikebana piece she created was the best teacher I could ask for. Her passion for this traditional Japanese Art form is inspirational. Under her patient guidance, I learnt the principles from the Sogetsu school of ikebana (yes! There is method in the randomness!) and I can’t wait to get home, try my hand at my next piece and do my sensei proud! (The specific equipment required can conveniently be purchased after the class - highly recommend getting a set!)"

Passion for Ikebana from Singapore

We had a beautiful guest, Sara,  from Colorado in USA.  Her brother got married with a Japanese woman and she naturally got interested in Japanese culture.  This is the first visit to Japan for her. Welcome to Tokyo, Sara!

We arranged Scoth Broom as beautiful lines and they can be bent with Ikebana special technique. She was amazed at how they would change their lines spontateously.  We heard that there were a lot of glass conatiners in America, but it's difficult to show the inside of a glass container beautifully because all the stems of flowers will be seen in transparent glass. A wonderful lady from LA dropped in our "Ikebana Experience at Ryokan" after she stayed at Hokkaido for skiing.  We  really appreciate she found us and came to our place even though they had only 4 days to stay at Tokyo.

As she knows about flowers very well ( she is enjoying flower arrangement at her home), we could feel her earnest to learn Ikebana. One of her questions is whether there is a kind of rule as for color combination. We don't have a rule about colors, but we cherish using seasonal flowers.  We have 4 seasons here in Tokyo, so we want to enjoy each flowers that feature each season. Now the spring is coming aroung the corner, we can enjoy spring flowers.

Ikebana Lessons for a family

We were really happy to meet an Amrican couple.  They are passionate for Ikebana and we were grateful for their true inquireing mind.  We were taking about the origin of Ikebana, the meanings of Ikebana, and the reason why we feature the space.  We believe the space is something to create, not something to fill in.  On this day coincidently this experience was private one only for them, so we could chat a lot and enjoied culutural exchange.

Passion for Ikebana

We welcomed a beautiful couple from America, LA.  We had a great time with them and really appreciate them for discovering our Ikebana lessons.  

There is a special alcove in each TATAMI room and this alcove is a characteristic place in Japanese traditional architecture to show a hanging scrool and Ikebana for guests.  We call this place TOKONOMO in Japanese.  After  guests finish to arrange Ikebana, they move their Ikebana works to TOKONOMA and take a memorable photo.  Each room has each different hanging scroll (as for this room, Japanese Iris painting), so what kind of scroll is waiting for you is a king of fun.
